EP 65: I Am the Standard: A Conversation with Deion Sanders

What does it really mean to lead—and how does leadership set the ceiling on everything you build?

In this special episode of The Private Practice Playbook, PGI founder Jay Geier sits down with Coach Deion Sanders for a live conversation at the Practice Growth Summit. Coach Prime shares powerful insights on discipline, confidence, preparation, and setting the standard as a leader.

Motivating, challenging, and timely—this episode is a must-listen for practice owners who want to raise the bar for their business and themselves.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 Welcome back to the Private Practice Playbook and Happy New Year.
00:00:04 --> 00:00:09 As we kick off 2026, we wanted to share a conversation that's really about mindset,
00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 leadership, and what it takes to grow something meaningful.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:17 Over the years at the Practice Growth Institute, we've hosted hundreds of events
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 and brought in speakers and conversations you don't typically hear in the industry.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 So today, I want to take you inside one of our Practice Growth Summit events.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:31 You're about to hear a live conversation between PGI founder Jay Geyer and coach Deon Sanders.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 You're going to feel like you're right there in the room with Coach Prime.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:40 And trust me, you're going to love this. It's motivating, it's challenging,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 and it will absolutely make you think differently about the standard you're setting this year.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 So if this episode doesn't get you fired up to crush the year ahead,
00:00:48 --> 00:00:50 it might be time to check your pulse. Let's get into it.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 You know, in working with practices, a lot of times the doctors have to end
00:01:08 --> 00:01:09 up being coaches, right? Right.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 It's like you end up being a doctor and then you end up being a coach.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 So, can we go back a little bit?
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 First of all, I respect the heck out of the coaches you had.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:20 But this Coach Prime, him, baby.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 Yeah. It's a little different. I'm cut a little different. Let's have a good
00:01:25 --> 00:01:27 time. I'm all the way in. We might as well enjoy this.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:33 Yeah, yeah, yeah. So put your seatbelts on. Let's take a little ride, all right? Yeah.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:42 So I'm sure there's, you know, people know you from different stages, right?
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 And so Coach Prime is where you are now. That's the now.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:54 So let's go back. So you're at Florida State. Bobby Bowden was your coach? Love it. Absolutely.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 I love Florida State. Florida State was kind of the building.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:04 That's when I was building a brand. That's when I was establishing and I was
00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 perfecting the package.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 You got to perfect before you package.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 Then after you perfect the package, you present everything to the consumer.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 So right then at Florida State, I was perfecting the package.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:21 Everyone else was chasing girls and I was chasing dreams. So are you,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 are you like part athlete and part marketer?
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 When you think back about it? I'm not going to say I'm part of anything.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 I'm a whole, I'm a whole lot of things.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:36 And yeah, yeah. A whole lot of things. And God just gifted me with a intellect
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 and insight and wisdom at an early age. You got to understand I come from a,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 father that one was a drug addict and one was an alcoholic, my stepfather,
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 and I've never drank a smoke another day of my life. So he's supposed to clap right there. Yeah.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:56 Just in case you're a little weary, I'm going to let you know when you're supposed to clap. Okay.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:04 So I've never followed anyone. I never tried to mock my whole countenance off
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 anyone. I was unapologetically primed.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:11 So all the stupid stuff you heard me say and you saw me do, it was not under
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 the influence. That was really me.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:17 That's how bad the judgment is. It's like, hey, doesn't matter.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 That was really me. Yeah.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 I had a little black book with quotes, with quotes that I had written down because
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 I knew I was going to make the play and I knew they were going to interview
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 me. So I had to have the quote ready.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 So I would make the play. They would interview me and they would say,
00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 what do you think about that play you just made? I said, I think the best thing
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 is peanut butter and jelly. I thought y'all knew.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 I had already written that several weeks prior.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 Yeah, if you point the ball to me after I scored a touchdown,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 if you point the ball to me, next thing you hear, you're going to hear the band
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 play. I had already wrote that down.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:55 It was all strategic and it was all a plan simply because an agent was vibrant
00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 enough to allow me to see the earnings from defensive backs.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 And I found out early in college that defensive back didn't make much,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 And that troubled me because I had told my mother she was never going to have
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 to work another day of her life.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 And I knew the money that they were paying defense back wouldn't have secured
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 that dream. So I had to create a brand.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 And I created a brand, whether you love me or hate me, you wanted to see me play.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:23 You want to see me win or you wanted to see me lose. But nevertheless, you wanted to see me.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:28 And that's how I created PRAM. And you really changed the pay and opportunity
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 for a lot of people after. People don't know that.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 Yeah, million-dollar cornerback. First $2 million cornerback.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:37 First $5 million cornerback, first $8 million. Yeah.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:45 But nowadays, they're pushing the brand before the game. You got to have the game, then the brand.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 You can't have the brand, then the game. You got to have the game.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:50 You got to be great at what you do before you establish the brand.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:54 You can't have a brand, and you ain't got nothing going on within your brand.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 You got to perfect before you package.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 If you don't write nothing down, take that. Tweet that to yourself.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 Perfect before you package.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 That's great. Well, and again, I want to point that out that,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:10 you know, the, that person who takes that, creates that value,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 it ends up benefiting people.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:16 It's benefited everyone after you. A lot of people don't realize that. Right.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:22 So any great coaches that you had? Every one of my coaches contributed to who
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 I am today in a multitude of ways.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 My Pee Wee League coach, Coach Dave Capel, who's passed away now,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:32 he came over to the hood and got me and took me to the other side of town and gave me opportunity.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:37 I had never been on an airplane or my parents. I had never been on a plane before.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:41 They put us on our first plane after we won and went and played a bowl game
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 in Atlanta, Georgia, and another time in North Carolina.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 During that process, I was in the inner city. I was in the hood.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:54 All I saw, the way out was selling dope, job core, or you're going to the military.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 And I didn't like any of those options.
00:05:56 --> 00:06:01 But on that team that I had when I was seven years old, it was the chief of
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 police. It was the mayor of the city.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 This person here owned a painting company. This person here owned a real estate company.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 So I would go over those young men's homes after the game, and I would see a
00:06:11 --> 00:06:17 long driveway with a beautiful home at the end of it. I would see tennis courts in the backyard.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:22 I saw swimming pools. I saw a family eat together for darn it my first time.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 And I said, oh, so this how they doing this.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:29 So when I went back to the hood where I live, I didn't get caught in the trappings of life.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 I didn't get caught in with the drug dealers. I didn't get caught up with the
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 drinkers. I didn't caught up with the whoremongers.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 I didn't get caught up in the nonsense because I had seen the vision.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:43 So he gave me vision. And next thing you know, I go to high school and my coach,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:49 Ron Hoover, disciplinarian, kicked me off the team my junior year, and I was him, him.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 I mean, I'm the man, but he had a rule that said, if you got suspended,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 you get thrown off the team.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 I was in the library minding my own business in a fighting suit.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:02 I'm breaking it up because that's who I am. And she just saw me in the midst.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:07 She'd say, you were being and supporting it. Since I was in the library, I looked it up.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 I ain't know what that meant and that was far
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 detached from what i was trying to do but we had a rule nevertheless
00:07:17 --> 00:07:20 i got kicked off the team but it taught me leadership a leader
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 should never put themselves in a situation like that a leader should always
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 lead from the front or the back or the middle whichever one you choose but it
00:07:26 --> 00:07:30 taught me a lot then i journeyed on to the next level went to florida state
00:07:30 --> 00:07:35 not only bobby bowden was who that man was a man of god a man of value a man
00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 of principles but my position coach mickey Andrews was a dog.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 He was that real father figure, that tough dude.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:46 And I learned so much from that man. And still today, when I get caught up in
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 a situation coaching, I pick up the phone and call him.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:54 And it's been so many people that attribute it to who I am today that coaches are everything to me.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 So that's why I understand the impact that I have on my kids that I coach and
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 other kids around the country.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:05 I truly understand the impact because it's funny how athletes have coaching
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 and we're somewhat successful, some we're deemed to be successful,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 but I think everyone should have a coach.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:15 That's what I just saw you doing, coaching. That's what you all do. You're a coach.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:19 You should all have a coach in some form or fashion. You should have a relationship
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 coach because ain't none of us could get that right.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:26 You should have a friendship coach and learn how to truly be a friend.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:30 You should have a business coach, you know what you mean as a financial coach, a job coach.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:33 You should have a plethora of coaches so you could get it right.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:37 And when you get weary, you need to have that coach sitting up there saying, come on, you can do this.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 In a fight, I love boxing, right? We're in Vegas.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 Don't they have someone in the corner telling you everything?
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 And then when you come back in the corner, they say, okay, now you got to hit
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 him with a left, hit him with a right. They got a coach.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:53 You need to be coached. If you ever just turn yourself over to a man of leadership,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:57 like a man of principles, a man of integrity, and a man that can get you to
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 where he's already been, you got it.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 Now you have a navigational system of life. You have a navigational system to
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 take you everywhere, right?
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 You should have a navigational system to take you somewhere in life that you
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 deem to go. Now that deserved a clap because that was some good stuff.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 So so i think a lot of you so what i
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 what i hear you saying is that not only you know we talk about
00:09:22 --> 00:09:27 mental intellect right you were you were listening to you were you were remembering
00:09:27 --> 00:09:32 every one of those situations yes i've seen videos of you coaching and you're
00:09:32 --> 00:09:35 probably doing exactly what you were doing when that guy threw you off the team
00:09:35 --> 00:09:39 right like and you even though it wasn't an experience that you go,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 oh, I'm having a great time.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:43 You didn't write it off. You carried it on the plate. It changed my life.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 Yeah. It changed my life. I don't have bad days, ladies and gentlemen.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:52 I never have a bad day. I may have a bad moment. I may even have a bad hour.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:58 I may have even a bad situation, but never a bad day.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:02 You know why? Because I got control of my life. I have the propensity to make
00:10:02 --> 00:10:06 it to what I want to make it. And I'm going to turn it to where I want to turn.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 You didn't feel that when I walked in this room, everything got cooler.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:16 Yeah, because that's just the way I roll. So I control these things.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:19 I can get up right now and just give you energy because that's who I am.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:22 That's how I get down. That's how I motivate. That's how I move. That's how I talk.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:26 That's how I walk. And I believe every darn thing I say. I love this life.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 I live and I live the life I love.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 You see how I change the energy? Just that expedition.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:43 So, OK. So again, what somebody may think you were doing, the truth behind this,
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 and this is why we want to do this, is to understand the truth, right?
00:10:46 --> 00:10:50 And so let's talk a little bit about that.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:54 So you had an ability to see what was happening in one place,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 ability to see what was happening somewhere else, work it out in your mind.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:04 So let's talk about this confidence issue, okay? Because clearly you got a lot of confidence.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:07 When you say that, you got to be careful and you got to take your time.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:11 Because my confidence may offend their insecurities.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:17 Well, I like it. You got to let that marinate because that was a big one.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 That was deep. That was deep.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:24 Say that again. The only people I have a problem with, the only persons you
00:11:24 --> 00:11:28 have a problem with, because I can tell the way you roll, is people that allow
00:11:28 --> 00:11:32 your confidence to offend their insecurity.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:40 Yes. I could get all over that. But because, again, it's the difference between
00:11:40 --> 00:11:44 really knowing what you're doing and faking it, right?
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 So you talked about it. It's all about the preparation, right?
00:11:47 --> 00:11:52 I've never faked none in my life. I don't—it's already hard enough being me,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 you know, consistently.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 You think I'm going to try to be you, too?
00:11:57 --> 00:12:03 Yeah, I can't do that. I'm not 100% perfect, but I'm not 100% wrong either.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:08 You know, so you can't emulate and imitate that of another person.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 Men should never put on mask mascara.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:15 That means you having a mask, you're pretending to be somebody you ain't and
00:12:15 --> 00:12:19 you just carrying on this stupid mission because you're lost and you don't know
00:12:19 --> 00:12:21 who you are. You know the reason you're lost?
00:12:21 --> 00:12:25 Because yesterday has crippled you and you're afraid of tomorrow.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 So now you're missing today. I'm going to say that again.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:32 Yesterday has crippled you. You're afraid of tomorrow and you're just not significant
00:12:32 --> 00:12:36 in today because you're allowing today to just go like the wind.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:39 All because of yesterday and tomorrow.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:43 What are you fearful of? What are you scared of? We all make mistakes.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:47 We all been through something. The problem is you stopped in the middle and
00:12:47 --> 00:12:50 let them take a picture and you posing for a selfie during your trials and tribulations.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:55 Baby, keep walking. I'm not a hunter. I don't believe in shooting or killing. But guess what?
00:12:55 --> 00:12:58 You're not going to get a clear shot at me because I'm constantly moving.
00:12:58 --> 00:13:01 And I'm constantly proceeding. I'm constantly just shaking.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:05 Now, I mean, I've seen people shoot deer. You don't shoot a deer when he's moving.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 You shoot a deer when he's still.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:10 I don't have time to be still because I'm always progressing.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 Let me tell you something about progressing. Last time I checked,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 my feet was pointed where?
00:13:15 --> 00:13:18 My ears protrude where? Forward. Everything about me, my eyes,
00:13:18 --> 00:13:22 forward. Everything about me, when I get excited, I'm... Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:22 --> 00:13:25 Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:31 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I said it. Yeah, I said it. Yeah, I said it. Yeah, I said it.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:39 So tell me if that's the case, why would you ever go backwards when God designed you to go forward?
00:13:39 --> 00:13:43 Everything about you is progression. Your feet are forward. You're supposed
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 to walk forward. You don't walk backwards.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 He didn't design you to do that.
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 That was good, wasn't it?
00:13:55 --> 00:14:00 So what you're saying is you have a lot of regrets. Not whatsoever.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 I love that. That's right. Not a want.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 So, okay.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:12 Listen and this is what,
00:14:13 --> 00:14:17 I want, you know, I think, I think a lot of people suffer from,
00:14:17 --> 00:14:21 you know, we were talking a lot about this before you came up about treating
00:14:21 --> 00:14:24 themselves the exact opposite of what you're describing.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:28 Right. Right. Beating themselves down. So now, so I want, I want to make sure
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 we understand this. Right.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:33 I mean, two sport athlete. I mean, you guys understand the, the,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 all the physical parts of this.
00:14:35 --> 00:14:38 Right. And I got, I got to think that there wasn't a lot of people telling you,
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 you should do that. And you cleverly did it. Right.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:44 And so and it puts you in in in
00:14:44 --> 00:14:48 a certainly a category of one in terms of athletes are concerned. Right.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:53 So and and so you you you you were a great athlete.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 I mean, it was fun. I mean, how many of you remember watching him?
00:14:55 --> 00:14:58 Right. I mean, it was fun. I mean, he said it. Right.
00:14:58 --> 00:15:01 It wasn't just it didn't matter what it was. Right.
00:15:01 --> 00:15:04 And and you've seen guys trying to kind of copy that over the years.
00:15:04 --> 00:15:07 I don't think any of them quite did it near as well as you did, by the way.
00:15:07 --> 00:15:14 But, you know, they they try to do it. But so you do this and you play for several
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 teams, you have a great career.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:20 And then when that's over, you end up coaching high school.
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 So talk to me about that. I did television first.
00:15:23 --> 00:15:28 I did television first when I was over for probably 16, 17 years.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 And I was coaching high school simultaneously.
00:15:31 --> 00:15:34 I started one of the largest youth programs in the country called Truth,
00:15:35 --> 00:15:39 Trust in God, Respect Myself and Other, Understand I Have Unlimited Possibilities. Thank you.
00:15:40 --> 00:15:43 Try my best, never give up, and honor the truth in this creed at all times.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:47 And we had a collection of kids that was dogs. I mean, they wanted to get to
00:15:47 --> 00:15:50 the next level. I say, one thing that I can assure you, you may not go pro,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 but you're going to be a professor.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:56 OK, we got football, baseball, basketball, cheer, volleyball, track.
00:15:56 --> 00:16:00 We got all those different things in the commonality of that that they had to get their grades.
00:16:01 --> 00:16:05 If you didn't get your grades, you couldn't play for truth because education
00:16:05 --> 00:16:09 was something that could catapult you to the next level.
00:16:09 --> 00:16:13 I'm not saying that's the only way, but for the majority of African-American
00:16:13 --> 00:16:17 kids, that's a tremendous way that you could get to the next level and have a head start on life.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:22 So I've always been in the business of trying to touch you, trying to reach
00:16:22 --> 00:16:25 you, trying to uplift you, trying to inspire you, trying to encourage you,
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 trying to motivate you, just trying to help you get to another level because
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 I've been there and done that.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 I have the navigational system to that. And it's hard for somebody to take you
00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 somewhere that they've never gone themselves.
00:16:35 --> 00:16:40 Yeah, for sure. I told you I don't have bad days and most of the time I don't
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 have bad ways because I have been living.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:47 You can't miss out on life. You only get one shot at this thing called life.
00:16:47 --> 00:16:51 In the middle of that lie and that L and that E is an if in the middle.
00:16:51 --> 00:16:56 And if you get this right, it's going to be enjoyable. So you need to start living.
00:16:56 --> 00:17:00 You need to start living. I'm going to say it one more time until I fire you
00:17:00 --> 00:17:02 up. You need to start living.
00:17:06 --> 00:17:10 Don't get mad, don't get jealous, and don't get envious of somebody that's living
00:17:10 --> 00:17:15 life or somebody that's truly living life because you mad because you ain't living.
00:17:15 --> 00:17:18 That's all it is. That ain't jealousy.
00:17:18 --> 00:17:22 You're just upset that he's living and you ain't. Live.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:28 You have the same darn 24 I get. You have ability, you have a talent, you have a gift.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:32 Exercise it like I did mine and start living.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:37 We only get one shot at the same, baby, and you better start doing it. Yeah.
00:17:42 --> 00:17:44 Oh, I'm feeling good now. I'm feeling real good.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:48 I'm enjoying myself. Thank you for the invite. Glad you're here.
00:17:49 --> 00:17:53 I love it because I'm living in my purpose. My purpose is to uplift and inspire and encourage.
00:17:54 --> 00:17:58 This is my purpose. I'm living in my purpose and I'm loving every minute of
00:17:58 --> 00:18:01 it. It's not work. It's not like I'm getting paid. I'm paying for every darn thing.
00:18:01 --> 00:18:04 So it's not like I was getting there. It was all coming out of my pocket.
00:18:04 --> 00:18:08 So it was good, though, because God would bless me so I could keep going.
00:18:08 --> 00:18:11 So I could keep doing it. So I could keep providing for these youngsters.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 And they were across the town.
00:18:12 --> 00:18:16 You got to stand. Me and my kids were going an hour across town just to make
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 this happen for everyone else.
00:18:17 --> 00:18:22 But it's something that I wanted my kids to be into because I didn't want to raise no soft kids.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:26 And then life targets them and life chases them.
00:18:26 --> 00:18:30 And then I find out that they're Jane and not Tarzan. Yeah. Okay. I hear you. Yeah.
00:18:31 --> 00:18:34 Let me explain. Yeah. You ain't going to clap when I get ready to say what I'm
00:18:34 --> 00:18:36 getting ready to say. So hold your claps.
00:18:37 --> 00:18:40 See, the problem is with this generation is we're raising cats.
00:18:41 --> 00:18:47 We're raising cats, not dogs. See, the way our family raised us, we were dogs.
00:18:47 --> 00:18:51 So when we came against adversity, all right, let's go get it.
00:18:51 --> 00:18:54 Let's go. Let's knuckle up and go get it. But guess what?
00:18:55 --> 00:18:58 All of us in here, the majority of us in here, probably 90% of us in here,
00:18:58 --> 00:19:00 we're in better situations than our families were.
00:19:01 --> 00:19:04 So what did you do when you got in a better situation? You said,
00:19:04 --> 00:19:07 you know what? I'm not going to treat my child like my parents treated me.
00:19:08 --> 00:19:10 I'm going to get them so much better. They're going to be at private schools.
00:19:10 --> 00:19:12 They're going to be that. They're going to be that. And guess what?
00:19:12 --> 00:19:14 The next thing you know, something comes up and you got a cat.
00:19:18 --> 00:19:23 Not a dog. You got a cat. Mommy, they're picking on me. We'll fight.
00:19:24 --> 00:19:28 You never taught them that because you got a darn cat and you're responsible
00:19:28 --> 00:19:30 for that. The reason I know, because I coach them.
00:19:31 --> 00:19:34 The reason I know, because I mentor them. The reason I know,
00:19:34 --> 00:19:37 because they're in my office, they're on my phones. They're calling me from
00:19:37 --> 00:19:39 the NFL all the way down. We're raising cats.
00:19:40 --> 00:19:45 We need to start back raising dogs. See, a cat, you got the litter box.
00:19:45 --> 00:19:50 You got the expensive food. You roll back the top. They all in the house jumping on everything.
00:19:50 --> 00:19:55 See, you got to understand, I had an old hood dog. I had an old hood dog that
00:19:55 --> 00:19:57 was in the backyard. Whatever you ate, they ate, okay?
00:19:58 --> 00:20:02 Yeah, whatever you did, they did. It wasn't no puppy chow and no,
00:20:02 --> 00:20:04 it wasn't none of that. It was dogs.
00:20:05 --> 00:20:10 So we got to start back raising dogs and not cats. They keep saying,
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 hadn't these kids changed?
00:20:11 --> 00:20:14 No, these kids ain't changed. Y'all have changed.
00:20:15 --> 00:20:19 Wow. Everybody ain't going to clap because you know you're raising cats. That's why.
00:20:21 --> 00:20:27 Can't hire cats because it's going to be a dog type situation and you're going to need a dog.
00:20:27 --> 00:20:33 And you can't hire cats. You got to let somebody else hire cats and not you.
00:20:33 --> 00:20:36 You need dogs. What you're trying to do, how you're trying to change the game,
00:20:37 --> 00:20:41 how you're trying to infect and influence and affect people, you need dogs.
00:20:43 --> 00:20:47 I may be mistaken, but I thought y'all invited me to a conference full of dogs. Yeah.
00:20:51 --> 00:20:57 Yes. Yes. I don't know if it's y'all. I thought, I really thought they invited
00:20:57 --> 00:21:00 me to a place that someone's come up in your territory that you're going to bark. Yeah.
00:21:01 --> 00:21:05 I thought they invited me to a place that someone's after you or your owner
00:21:05 --> 00:21:07 or your pet, you're going to run them off.
00:21:07 --> 00:21:11 I really thought that you really was going to be the guardian of your territory
00:21:11 --> 00:21:14 and you was going to handle your business. That's where I really thought I was coming.
00:21:15 --> 00:21:17 I didn't think I was coming nowhere where they was hollering me out.
00:21:20 --> 00:21:24 Yeah, we need some dogs in this world. We need some people to stand up and stand
00:21:24 --> 00:21:27 for what's theirs. Yeah, that's what we need.
00:21:27 --> 00:21:30 That's what we need. I'm tired of y'all backing down.
00:21:31 --> 00:21:34 I'm tired of you backing down. I'm tired of you running from the struggle.
00:21:34 --> 00:21:38 I'm tired of you running from adversity. You got to run to adversity.
00:21:39 --> 00:21:42 You got to run to the struggle because you're going to go through something.
00:21:42 --> 00:21:44 The Bible says in this world, there will be tribulation.
00:21:45 --> 00:21:47 Now, when tribulations come, what are you going to do?
00:21:47 --> 00:21:50 You're going to run away like a cat or you're going to stand up like a darn
00:21:50 --> 00:21:53 dog? Because the dogs are the one that's getting rewarded. The dogs are the
00:21:53 --> 00:21:54 one that's getting elevated.
00:21:54 --> 00:21:57 The dogs are the one that's coming up. The dogs are the one that's getting paid.
00:21:57 --> 00:22:00 Dogs are the one that's driving the cars. The dogs are the one that's living
00:22:00 --> 00:22:03 well. The dogs are the ones that's bawling right now.
00:22:03 --> 00:22:08 I don't know about you cats, but I know I'm a darn dog. I don't know about that. Yeah.
00:22:10 --> 00:22:15 I am the standard. Like, honestly, I am the standard.
00:22:15 --> 00:22:20 I told my kids that play for me, and I've done a great job of selecting some
00:22:20 --> 00:22:22 great coaches that can coach their butts off.
00:22:22 --> 00:22:26 But my coaches are a reflection of who they want their kids to be.
00:22:26 --> 00:22:29 I tell the kids who play for us, if you want to know who your coach wants,
00:22:30 --> 00:22:31 just find out who your coach is.
00:22:32 --> 00:22:36 So coach, stand up. I'm this. I'm that. I'm this kind of guy.
00:22:36 --> 00:22:39 So who do your kid? Who do you think he is? And he tell me who that coach is.
00:22:39 --> 00:22:41 I said, that's what he wants.
00:22:41 --> 00:22:45 We want a reflection of us. You trying to find a reflection of you.
00:22:45 --> 00:22:48 Right. Last time I checked. Right. That's what. Right.
00:22:48 --> 00:22:51 I'm leaning back so he can see the sun. All right.
00:22:52 --> 00:22:54 That's what we're trying to find. I'm looking at my kids like some of y'all
00:22:54 --> 00:22:58 got to have something out of me. I've been feeling you for a long time. You all look like me.
00:22:59 --> 00:23:02 You all talk like me. You should be acting like me pretty darn soon.
00:23:02 --> 00:23:05 Or I'm going to blood test somebody because something's wrong.
00:23:07 --> 00:23:07 Yeah.
00:23:09 --> 00:23:16 In this conversation, you heard Coach Deion Sanders say something that matters. I am the standard.
00:23:16 --> 00:23:20 That applies just as much to running a practice as it does to leading a team.
00:23:20 --> 00:23:23 At the Practice Growth Institute, we work with private practice owners who want
00:23:23 --> 00:23:26 to raise the standard of their business without giving up ownership,
00:23:27 --> 00:23:28 control, or their future.
00:23:28 --> 00:23:34 For nearly 30 years, PGI has helped dentists grow, scale, and turn their practice
00:23:34 --> 00:23:39 into a high-value wealth-building asset through leadership, systems,
00:23:39 --> 00:23:41 and intentional growth, not more grind.
00:23:41 --> 00:23:44 If this conversation made you pause and think about what's possible for your
00:23:44 --> 00:23:47 practice, a discovery call is a simple place to start.
00:23:48 --> 00:23:52 You can visit MyPGI.com to schedule a discovery call and explore whether coaching
00:23:52 --> 00:23:55 is the right next step for you. The standard always starts with the leader.
00:23:57 --> 00:24:00 You, you, you. And you got to want this, people.
00:24:00 --> 00:24:04 I can't want this for you. He can't want this for you. He can't want this for
00:24:04 --> 00:24:06 you. You got to want it for your darn self.
00:24:06 --> 00:24:09 When I believe in you more than you believe in your darn self,
00:24:09 --> 00:24:12 I got a problem with you because I'm going to get tired of motivating you and
00:24:12 --> 00:24:15 encourage you and pushing you up in the back, putting a stick in your back so
00:24:15 --> 00:24:17 you can stand up to the wiles of life.
00:24:18 --> 00:24:21 You got to be able to stand up for yourself and fight for yourself and talk
00:24:21 --> 00:24:25 for yourself. I can't keep doing it for you. I'm tired of being a puppet master.
00:24:25 --> 00:24:29 I'm tired of my hand in your back, moving your mouth and talking for you.
00:24:29 --> 00:24:30 You got to do it for yourself.
00:24:31 --> 00:24:35 You got to want this. And while you want this, guess what? There's going to have to be a sacrifice.
00:24:36 --> 00:24:39 Now, what are you willing to give up to be who he is, what he is,
00:24:39 --> 00:24:42 how he is? There has to be a darn sacrifice.
00:24:42 --> 00:24:46 You think all of us are up here and ain't been through hell and high water and
00:24:46 --> 00:24:48 we didn't have to give up some things to get where we are?
00:24:48 --> 00:24:50 We up in for a reason. We paid a darn price.
00:24:50 --> 00:24:53 We hadn't been on a cross, but we darn sure was right next to him.
00:24:54 --> 00:24:58 You ain't willing to sacrifice nothing. You still want to do what you do,
00:24:58 --> 00:25:01 say what you say, think like you think, walk like you walk, talk like you talk.
00:25:01 --> 00:25:02 You don't want to give up nothing.
00:25:03 --> 00:25:06 To get to the level that you want to get to, you're going to have to give up
00:25:06 --> 00:25:10 something. And you know darn well what that something is, but you're not willing to give it up.
00:25:11 --> 00:25:13 Now, when I said that, you start thinking about it. Darn it,
00:25:13 --> 00:25:14 I know what he's talking about.
00:25:16 --> 00:25:18 And I'm going to have to give it up. I don't want to give it up.
00:25:18 --> 00:25:19 You know why? Because I'm comfortable.
00:25:20 --> 00:25:26 I'm not happy. I'm comfortable. You know what we share? You know what every one of us share in here?
00:25:26 --> 00:25:31 We ain't where we want to be. Even me. I feel like I could do more.
00:25:31 --> 00:25:35 I feel like I could do better. I feel like I can affect more. I can influence more.
00:25:36 --> 00:25:40 I could do more. But we all have the same amount of time.
00:25:41 --> 00:25:45 And I just feel like I could do so much more and so much better than I'm doing.
00:25:45 --> 00:25:47 And guess what? I'm dominating that thing right now.
00:25:47 --> 00:25:50 We're doing things that have never been done in college football.
00:25:50 --> 00:26:00 We're breaking the chains and the struggles of ignorance and adolescence and just mediocrity.
00:26:01 --> 00:26:05 The things that we're accomplishing have not been accomplished yet.
00:26:05 --> 00:26:10 And we're doing it. And you got that in you. What are you waiting on?
00:26:10 --> 00:26:13 We got the same amount of time.
00:26:13 --> 00:26:16 What are you waiting on? And that's why you jealous.
00:26:17 --> 00:26:21 That's why you envious. Because you seeing her doing her thing and walking like
00:26:21 --> 00:26:25 she walk and talking like you talk, you know, talking like she talks. And you mad.
00:26:26 --> 00:26:29 Why? You got it too. Go get it.
00:26:30 --> 00:26:33 Do you want it as bad as her? Because you don't know what she's going through
00:26:33 --> 00:26:35 at home. You don't know what he's dealing with at home.
00:26:35 --> 00:26:39 You don't know how bad them cats are that he got in his house. You.
00:26:43 --> 00:26:47 Oh, that was good. You got to understand, when I talk, I see what I say.
00:26:48 --> 00:26:50 And I actually saw some cats in a house.
00:26:52 --> 00:26:55 Just tearing up curtains and everything. That's my mind. I'm sorry.
00:26:56 --> 00:26:57 No, they got cats in their office.
00:26:59 --> 00:26:59 True that.
00:27:02 --> 00:27:06 Wow. Let's go, baby. I'm ready. Give me the next question. Let's go.
00:27:07 --> 00:27:11 Let's go. Let's go. Get to me. Get to me.
00:27:14 --> 00:27:18 What about, I think there was one about, what's the most motivating thing?
00:27:18 --> 00:27:20 I don't know if there's an answer to that one. We got a lot of that.
00:27:21 --> 00:27:23 Yeah, I motivate me. I don't need you to motivate me.
00:27:24 --> 00:27:27 When I get up, I'm motivated. When I get up, I'm on a mission.
00:27:27 --> 00:27:31 I'm in bed early. I know my nickname is Prime, and I'm prime time,
00:27:31 --> 00:27:33 and you think I'm out clubbing and all that.
00:27:33 --> 00:27:37 I've never drank alcohol in my life. I never smoked. I stopped using profanity
00:27:37 --> 00:27:39 at age 18. I'm a pretty good guy. Now, I do have my stuff.
00:27:40 --> 00:27:44 I do have some trappings. but nine out of 10 days, I'm a darn good guy.
